In the Drifter hotel Nicole Cota Studio led the design works and renovation of this 1956 motel, while layering on nostalgic American-highway period references by way of white geometric lattices, mid-century furniture, concrete walls, palm-leaf wallpaper, floral-patterned breeze bricks and Oaxacan tile-work.
Encased in slick grey concrete walls, the bedrooms are complemented with Mexa furnishings, including desks and chair, in the lobby, amoeba shaped solid tables and bright red lounge chairs add a modern look to the space, and the more entertaining diversions are to be found pool-side with outdoor flower chairs and vintage loungers.
To be clear though, it’s not exactly a hotel and it’s not exactly new: The iconic Austin Motel has technically been around since 1938. Austin Motel is located in buzzy South Congress Avenue, in Austin, Texas, this was a major project for Bunkhouse, renovating this Austin icon was a big challenge, Mexa was considered in the project incorporating new furnishings for the rooms, pool furniture, and courtyard lounge areas.
Furnishings include Ixtapa chairs all over the property, primavera wood top custom designed tables, for the rooms, and re-editions of vintage metallic furniture for the pool area.
In words of Liz, the owner, the goal was never to transform the property into something completely new, but rather to refresh and update its design while still honoring its unique spirit.
Hotel San Cristóbal is located next to a fishermen village about 15 minutes south of Todos Santos, Mexico, this is the first international project from Bunkhouse hotels, for this project, Texas hotelier Liz Lambert worked closely with a group of Mexican makers, including us.
The project included development and production of furniture and accessories: chairs in all versions, loungers, tables and sidetables, and accessories ranging from luggage racks to water dispensers. At Hotel San Cristobal it is clear that every single element of the hotel has been painstakingly executed for maximum sensory enjoyment, and there’s a specifically modern feel in the sum of all the small details that embraces a whole experience.
