When I tell people I taught history I’m always amazed at how often their response is, “Oh, I hated history. I didn’t learn anything worthwhile, just dates and facts.” That makes me sad because history is the greatest subject ever to teach and no one should find it boring. That’s just wrong! I suspect the reason that a lot of people didn’t like history was that their teachers didn’t tell enough stories. History is simply the story of people throughout time, and what’s more interesting to us than people?
To simplify the events Comics studies I divided the events into categories. I had the students research a chosen category (great for written report), and then I set aside a day where the student would present a brief report on the selected topic.
There are two kinds of history, the documented and the undocumented. These two differs on the kind of approach from people. Documented histories are seen on books, libraries and other medium whereas the undocumented are those events that have no evidence like storytelling, legends and more.
I recently posted a feature called Women and the War at my genealogy site. Through this accounting I learned a lot about my grandmother and other female family members and the roles they played during war times. I began to understand the frugality of my grandparents generation in a way I never really embraced before.

Love of reading and appreciation of history is not taught. It is caught. Children love stories. History is just stories we can tell to our children. Tell them the stories we cherish, and they will begin to question and to read.

How these events changed our present and give us an alert of today’s events and how can they change our future. With these principles, the Millennial School of Poetics aspires to tie together all the strings of poetic principles from schools that came before it. We do not reject them. We embrace them. All the forms, all the styles, all the tools and techniques of previous schools of poetry are available to us. We study them so that we can employ them, own them, and improve them.

Learning about these women has given me a new foundation of pride in who I am as a woman and what I can be and do in this life. These are my sisters whose sacrifices and accomplishments had been lost to me. Now they are found and I have a new community of role models. They need to be shared.
